At Newground Together, one of the areas of support they provide is to young adults and children – this article follows a case study demonstrating how Newground Together supports those who need it in their community. People are able to come to Newground for support through the ‘Engage programme’ – a mentoring programme for children and young people aged 8 – 19 years old.
This case study follows Jo, who struggled with talking to people, low school attendance and felt overwhelmed when choosing a career path. Jo began attending the green futures programme by Newground Together where they were able to take part in a range of engaging tasks such as:
- woodwork skills
- improving community green spaces
- visiting nature reserves
From attending the outdoor sessions, Jo was able to begin socialising and forming strong friendships with the staff and other young people on the programme, as well as developing an excellent work ethic and positive attitude.
Now, Jo is feeling optimistic about their future, having found a passion for working in outdoor spaces and physical activities. There are opportunities for Jo gaining a LANTRA qualification, also offered by Newground Together.
One member of staff said:
” Jo’s journey shows how powerful the right support can be on young people who may not have clear ideas on what they want to do in the future. They have grown in confidence, learned new skills, built strong friendships and now have a positive vision for their future. “
