May’s update included the Planning (Wales) Act 2026 introducing a new consolidated framework for planning in Wales. It updates Welsh planning legislation, making it easier to understand and use in practice. This means that planning legislation in Wales will sit more clearly within its own legal framework, instead of being spread across several pieces of legislation shared with other UK jurisdictions.
To support this change, the Planning (Consequential Provisions) (Wales) Act 2026 makes a wide range of amendments to existing Acts and Regulations. These changes include updates to terminology and powers, so that wider UK legislation is aligned with the new Welsh framework. This has resulted in June’s legal updates including a significant number of amendments made by the Planning (Consequential Provisions) (Wales) Act 2026. These updates largely do not introduce new duties for organisations; however, because planning law is referred to across many different pieces of UK legislation, organisations may see a higher than usual number of Welsh planning-related updates in their legal register.
