Automated Vehicles Act 2024

The Automated Vehicles Act 2024 establishes the framework and principles for the Secretary of State to authorise the use of automated vehicles as road vehicles in Great Britain.

Amendment

The following sections come into force on 15th May 2026:

  • Part 5 (permits for automated passenger services), except for sections 84, and 89(8)(b) and (10), which relate to civil sanctions for non-compliance; and
  • section 93 enabling the Secretary of State and Welsh Ministers to require traffic regulation authorities to provide information on relevant traffic regulation measures.

Duties

There are no direct duties for most organisations under this Act. Additional specific duties for organisations and individuals as regulated bodies are expected to be made through amendments to existing legislation and the introduction of regulations.
