Under the Planning and Infrastructure Act 2025, the Secretary of State is given the power to implement regulations to streamline the development consent process for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) involving electricity and clean energy, roads and public transport, and water supplies.

Amendment
Various sections of the Act come into force from 17th June 2026, 24th July 2026, 1st September 2026 and 31st October 2026. These changes are listed below.
From 17th June 2026
Sections 57 and 104 come into force relating to Natural England providing advice to public authorities and the exercise and transfer of transport functions.
From 24th July 2026
Sections 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 11 come into force relating to the development consent process for nationally significant infrastructure projects, including:
- changes to when consent is required;
- pre-application requirements;
- the acceptance of applications;
- local impact reports;
- examinations; and
- entry and survey rights.
From 1st September 2026
Sections 33 and 36 come into force relating to deadlines for Highways Act consultations and decisions, as well as powers to publish guidance on draft orders.
From 31st October 2026
Section 54(2) comes into force relating to technical changes so that existing planning legislation refers to the new delegation framework for planning decisions.
