Mini Summary

The Storage of Carbon Dioxide (Licensing etc.) Regulations 2010 implement EC Directive 2009/31/EC on the geological storage of carbon dioxide. These Regulations provide a licensing regime for the storage of carbon dioxide within the UK’s territorial waters and areas that have been designated as gas importation and storage zones.

Various duties apply and are available to view on the Legislation Update Service.

 

Amendment

Those who store carbon under a licence must retain information on carbon storage and carbon storage samples from 13th May 2025, irrespective of whether their licence was issued before or after this date.

Carbon storage information must be retained as per the Schedule, including:

  • survey information;
  • well information;
  • site information;
  • injection and production information;
  • monitoring information; and
  • installation information.


Carbon storage samples must be retained for at least 6 months, as per regulation 4
