Mini Summary

Under the Planning and Infrastructure Act 2025, the Secretary of State is given the power to implement regulations to streamline the development consent process for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) involving electricity and clean energy, roads and public transport, and water supplies. There are no duties for organisations under this Act, duties are held by the Secretary of State, Natural England, Welsh Ministers and Scottish Ministers.

 


 
The Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017 implement Directive 92/43/EEC on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora and Directive 2009/147/EC on the conservation of wild birds. They ensure that the special areas of conservation, habitats and natural species are protected.

Amendment

From 21st May 2026, requirements under the Planning and Infrastructure Act 2025 are extended to include measures to assess and review ‘Ramsar sites’ (wetlands of international importance, designated under the Ramsar Convention).

 

There are no duties for organisations under this Act; duties are held by the Secretary of State, Natural England, Welsh Ministers and Scottish Ministers.
