Environmental Compliance Specialist

Location: Remote, monthly travel to our Head Office in Blackburn.

Salary: Salary range: £49,980 – £56,744 +10% pension contribution

Do you have a strong understanding of environmental legislation and want to work with a social enterprise to transform the legal understanding of our clients? If so, we have an opportunity for an Environmental Compliance Specialist to join our Internal Consultancy team where you will use your knowledge and experience to ensure our clients can understand legislation through written summaries, articles, or answering complex queries.

The Team

The Compliance People is unlike any other consultancy or compliance service. We are part of Newground, a social enterprise, so instead of our profits going to shareholders, they are gift-aided into our charity Newground Together in support of environment, social and community projects.

Our Internal Consultancy Team is a principal part of our business. We take pride in providing our customers with easy to understand, accurate and relevant updates and summaries of EHS legislation. We are always looking to improve our skills and knowledge: training and CPD is a crucial part of our work. Operating closely with our external consultants providing in-person services, such as audits, we aim to ensure our clients have the highest quality of EHS compliance services to understand and achieve their legal requirements.

The Role

We are looking for someone with experience of environmental legislation; you may have delivered environmental consultancy, training, or anything else that has exposed you to the world of compliance with environmental legislation. It’s important you have a wealth of knowledge on what organisations need to do to comply with legislation, and that you can utilise this knowledge to help our customers. This is a fantastic opportunity to put your knowledge and skills to use in a new way.

It would be an advantage to have some health and safety knowledge too. A willingness to learn about health and safety compliance would otherwise be key.

Key responsibilities

  • Being a key point of contact for the team to provide expert knowledge and guidance on environmental legal compliance.
  • Researching and writing summaries of UK, Republic of Ireland and EU EHS legislation, consultations and standards to a very high quality, ensuring they can be easily understood by our subscribers.
  • Reviewing work written by other members of the team, ensuring they meet our rigorous quality standards, and providing feedback where appropriate.
  • Producing newsletter articles, videos and other resources, to provide insight into topical compliance issues, and practical guidance on compliance.
  • Supporting members of the team to broaden their knowledge and skills of environmental legislation, through the provision of in-house training, mentoring and day-to-day support.
  • Assisting subscribers in setting up their legal registers, ensuring all the correct legislation is identified for their activities.
  • Answering complex queries on EHS compliance from our subscribers.
  • Taking ownership of projects to improve or develop our processes or the content we provide in the Internal Consultancy team.

We’d like to hear from you if you have:

  • Practical experience of environmental legal compliance across a range of business sectors
  • Experience of environmental management systems including ISO 14001 (desirable)
  • Excellent ability to summarise complex information into easy to understand content
  • Experience developing and delivering training

  • Degree-level qualification in an environment-related subject, or equivalent experience
  • Member of relevant industry body, e.g. IEMA; having achieved or working towards chartership status
  • Full driving licence and the use of own vehicle with insurance for business use, to undertake occasional travel as required (essential)

We’re committed to having a positive working culture by asking for feedback, and importantly, by acting on it in a way to benefit employees. Various kinds of support is offered at all levels of the organisation both in regards to work performance and outside of work, such as with the cost of living, mental health support, or getting advice on finding suitable care for a family member, to mention a few.

The benefits of this role include:

  • 27 days holiday, plus bank holidays
  • An additional day’s holiday for each year you work here, (up to a maximum of 5 days)
  • Generous pension scheme with up to 10% employer contribution
  • 3 volunteer days
  • A 37-hour flexible working week; the majority of our team work a 9-day fortnight
  • Paid professional membership subscriptions
  • Healthcare cash scheme to claim back costs of dental check-ups, medical prescriptions, etc.
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Car lease scheme

If you have extensive relevant consultancy experience in both environment and health and safety, there is opportunity for a higher salary than stated.
