Location: UK Remote (Monthly North West England in-person meetings required)
Salary: £46,700
Contract: Full-time, permanent
Application deadline: 12 August 2025

About The Compliance People

We provide online tools, support and advice to help organisations keep on top of health, safety, and environmental compliance obligations. As a social enterprise, all our profits are gift-aided into our charity Newground Together in support of environment, social and community projects. We’re a small, friendly and expanding team, passionate about improving our established product.

About the role

Join us as our first in-house Software Developer. This role offers significant autonomy in advancing our internal development, maintaining and enhancing features, and crucially, elevating the user experience of our web applications.

You’ll work with PHP and JavaScript, using frameworks like Symfony/Slim, and support our shift towards modern JS libraries like Vue.js. Our stack includes SQL, Git, and Docker. A passion for good front end design is essential.

You’ll work alongside our Product Development Manager and external development partners, providing in-house coordination, translating needs into solutions, and defining our internal software development processes as we grow.

What you’ll do

  • Champion and enhance user experience across our web applications.
  • Develop and maintain complex web applications using PHP, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
  • Contribute across the full development lifecycle, applying and promoting secure coding practices (OWASP, NCSC).
  • Support ISO 27001 information security standards.

What we’re looking for

  • Proven experience with modern web applications (PHP, JavaScript).
  • Strong front-end skills (HTML, CSS, UI component libraries), including accessibility and responsive design.
  • Familiarity with Git and testing/debugging.
  • Experience writing secure code based on OWASP/NCSC guidance.
  • Proven experience with Linux and cloud infrastructure (e.g., Digital Ocean, AWS).
  • Self-motivated, independent, and passionate about technology.
  • Strong grasp of object-oriented programming and design patterns.

Benefits

The Compliance People is unlike any other consultancy or compliance service. We are part of Newground CIC, a social enterprise, so instead of our profits going to shareholders, they are gift-aided into our charity ‘Newground Together’ in support of environment, social and community projects.

The benefits of this role include:

  • 27 days holiday, plus bank holidays.
  • An additional day’s holiday for each year you work here (up to a maximum extra of 5 days).
  • Generous pension scheme with up to 10% employer contribution.
  • 3 volunteer days per year.
  • A 37-hour flexible working week.
  • Paid professional membership subscriptions.
  • Healthcare cash scheme to claim back costs of dental check-ups, medical prescriptions, etc.
  • Cycle to work scheme.
  • Car lease scheme.

How to apply

We welcome applicants who are keen to learn and grow into the role, even if you don’t meet every requirement listed.

Send a CV and cover letter including the details below to the following email [email protected]. A CV without a covering letter won’t be considered.

  • How your experience makes you a good fit for this role
  • Why you’re interested in working for us specifically
  • Tell us about a time you improved the usability or user experience of a web application – what was the problem, and what did you do?
