As a social enterprise, 100% of our profits generated are gift-aided to our parent charity, Newground Together. This month we look at Deb’s story and her journey with our charity.
Through their person-centred approach, our charity helps to give people the skills and confidence to gain meaningful employment.
Deb approached our charity following a sudden change in employment; she was worried about how her age and experience might affect her job search.
Deb told us:
“I thought: ‘Who’s going to employ me at my age?’ I’ve done care work, I’ve worked as a pharmacy technician, but that’s all I’ve done. It’s frightening. I’ve never used a computer and using one is so complex to someone who’s used to using pen and paper.”
With this in mind, Ed, one of our charity’s employment advisors, recommended Deb sign up to a computer course.
After working to refine Deb’s CV and upon completion of her training course, Deb was ready to start applying for jobs. Not long after, Deb was offered a job.
“I got the job with Ed’s help. I had to send over documents by email. It took me a couple of days to do it, but I finally sent an email! I did it! And that was because I had the computer and I played around with it. At the end of the day, if you keep going and you keep pressing, there’s going to be something at the end.”
