The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 aim to ensure that vehicles are manufactured to high standards and that the operator maintains such standards to ensure that vehicles are roadworthy. This entry only summarises Part K of The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, which covers the control of emissions and noise.

Amendment

Hydrogen-powered Non-Road Mobile Machinery (NRMM) and agricultural vehicles are allowed to be driven on the road, provided they meet minimum safety requirements.

In order to be driven on the road, hydrogen-powered NRMM and agricultural vehicles must:

  • be designed and constructed, and not just adapted, to be fuelled by hydrogen;
  • comply with the Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016;
  • comply with Schedule 5A (Hydrogen Fuelled Machinery); and
  • be one of the following vehicles: 
    • an agricultural motor vehicle;
    • engineering plant; or
    • a works truck.
