The Persistent Organic Pollutants (Amendment) (No. 3) Regulations 2025

Jurisdiction: Great Britain

Commencement: 21st May 2025

Amends: Assimilated Regulation 2019/1021 on persistent organic pollutants

Mini Summary

Assimilated Regulation 2019/1021 on persistent organic pollutants creates a legal framework to protect human health and the environment by prohibiting, phasing out, or restricting the production, placing on the market and use of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). Waste containing POPs must be managed and processed in a way that minimises contamination and which destroys or irreversibly transforms the waste, so that it no longer has the characteristics of POPs. This includes waste furniture treated with fire retardant POPs.

Duties

Various duties apply and are available to view on the Legislation Update Service.

Amendment

Dechlorane Plus and UV-328 are temporarily removed from the list of controlled persistent organic pollutants, allowing them to continue to be placed on the market. Restrictions on these substances will be re-applied in the future, once a full list of exemptions has been defined.
