The Environmental Authorisations (Scotland) Regulations 2018 prohibit activities involving radioactive material and/or waste from being carried out without authorisation. They also transpose key elements of the Basic Safety Standards Directive (Directive 2013/59/EURATOM).establishing duties for organisations.

Amendment

The regulations are updated from 1st June 2025 to add additional definitions, including for best available techniques (BAT) and to update wording to cover the authorisation of water, waste and pollution prevention and control activities.

 

From 1st November 2025 the Regulations will form an Integrated Authorisation Framework (IAF) under which the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) can provide environmental authorisations for regulated activities involving:

  • radioactive substances;
  • water;
  • waste; and
  • pollution prevention and control.
