The Electricity Act 1989 enables the privatisation of the electricity supply industry in Great Britain. A licensing regime is established, and the Office of Electricity Regulation (OFFER) is appointed as the regulator, which has since become the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets Authority (Ofgem).

Amendment

The capacity of solar generating stations, which require consent from the Secretary of State to be constructed, extended, or operated, is increased from 50 megawatts to 100 megawatts from 31st December 2025.
