Mini Summary

The National Oil Reserves Agency Act 2007 imposes a levy on oil companies that consume or sell petroleum products (transport fuels)* or renewable transport fuel**. This levy aims to incentivise the transition towards renewable fuels in Ireland.

Amendment

Fuel produced from palm oil mill effluents (POME) no longer qualifies for certain partial biofuel obligation certificates introduced by the National Oil Reserves Agency Act 2007 (Additional Certificates for Renewable Transport Fuel) Regulations 2023 (a previous update)The specific certificates that fuel produced from POME are no longer eligible for relate to:

  • certificates for each megajoule of biomethane or biogas;
  • certificates for each megajoule of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) or co-processed HVO;
  • certificates for each megajoule of renewable fuel used in the aviation sector; and
  • certificates for each megajoule of renewable fuel used in the maritime sector.
