ISO 22000:2018 Food Safety Management Systems

ISO 22000 enables organisations to put in place a food safety management system (FSMS) that helps them improve their overall performance when it comes to food safety.

The requirements in the standard are generic and are intended to be applicable to all organisations in the food chain, regardless of size and complexity.

Where an organisation is still certified to ISO 22000:2005, it will need to transition its certification by 19th June 2021 after which all remaining 2005 certificates will be invalid.

The main changes are:

  • Adoption of the High-Level Structure common to all ISO management system standards, such as ISO 14001 and ISO9001, making it easier to integrate systems;
  • A new approach to risk which distinguishes between risk at the operation level and the business level of the management system; and
  • Clarification of the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, by having two separate cycles in the standard working together, one covering the management system and the other covering the principles of HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point).
